Why Are Deters, Leis, and Burke Stopping Hundreds From Voting?
After I sent this electronic mail to Sheriff Simon Leis and the Hamilton County Board of Elections, I followed up with the following communication to Hamilton County Commissioners Todd Portune, Greg Hartmann, and Chris Monzel. The Commissioners have known about this problem with voting for years and done nothing about it. Why? Tim Burke -- the head Democrat in Cincinnati and Hamilton County -- is on the Board of Elections. Why are Burke, Leis, and Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters so comfortable with denying the right to vote to hundreds of people?
Gentlemen,
I believe Hamilton County has a clear legal duty to provide eligible voters being detained/incarcerated in the Hamil...ton County jail with an opportunity to exercise their clear legal constitutionally protected right to vote for the candidate(s) of their choice on election day and participate in elections on an equal basis with other citizens in the jurisdiction. It is my understanding that the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office and the Hamilton County Board of Elections (BOE) are not performing their duty to facilitate voting at the jail.
Please do what you can to get this situation fixed. The county wastes a lot of money fighting in court over issues that should be resolved without court intervention. This is one of those situations.
Please understand that I'm not picking on Cincinnati and Hamilton County; I'm standing up for the rights of voters throughout Ohio. I intend to issue similar requests to every BOE and jailer in Ohio.
Thanks,
Nathaniel Livingston, Jr.
